Up until now, I have been blogging on the subject of "The Business of Baseball" with varying subjects under that heading. With the World Series now in full swing, I decided to forego that topic and with election day just around the corner, to zero in on the upcoming elections. This is the year for the
Senate race, the House of Representatives race, the gubernatorial race, as well as local issues and other offices to fill.
I'm sure in the past several weeks and days, you have all seen the inundation on most of the TV networks throughout the greater Dayton area of the political ad campaigning going on. For the lack of
better terminology, I'll just call it desperate political "mudslinging." One candidate touting his record of having accomplished whatever it was he promised during his previous campaign, if the candidate is up for re-election, then not twenty minutes later the other side of the fence, if you will, comes up and gives the negative report on his opponent and how that opponent promised thus and so and has failed and not lived up to those promises and a new way of doing business is needed in Ohio and in Washington. You have ads
going on about candidates robbing during their terms in office by not working for the people that put them in office, but working for the big corporations or big banks or big unions and so forth and so forth and so forth. A few(very few)have forgotten about the issues...Yes, I'm sure "mudslinging" has gone on since this nation was birthed and free elections became a way of life. We probably didn't know about the early days because there wasn't the media coverage then that there is today. In any election, the best thing to do is keep abreast of all the issues, not just the candidates, and what these people are standing for and what they are willing to legitimately do to earn the vote they are seeking.
Speaking of issues, there is one issue on the November ballot that is being hailed as "critical." This issue is, of course, Issue 9, which is the Human Services issue. This issue contains language for The United Way,
the agaency which handles the Mental Retardation & Developmentally Disabled programs, it deals with
Sinclair College, and several other agencies that are funded right here in the Miami Valley. However, one issue that is not listed, one that has been found to be "back doored" so to speak, one that someone doing research on Issue 9 found out, and that is taxpayer funding for abortions. We received a card in the mail a few days ago in regard to Issue 9 and what was being sponsored by Issue 9. Unfortunately before I could make a complete list off that card, it apparently got thrown away. There are a lot of organizations that are support Issue 9, but they are probably doing so not having the knowledge of the abortion issue included.
Before you vote or support a candidate or issue, make sure you are aware of what that candidate truly stands for, and make sure you have as many facts as possible about the issues you are planning on supporting before you go to the polls to cast your ballot. Above all, make sure you vote. Rememer, if you don't cast your ballot and the individual or issue you didn't favor wins, don't complain because you didn't do your part in the election process.
